About
AT THE BAY | I TE KOKORU provides a platform for Aotearoa New Zealand writers of the short form, from short stories to hybrid, from creative nonfiction small stories to translations and translingual work, from flash fiction to micro.
We are developing this resource for short story writers of Aotearoa, with online quarterly contents, a book series and a growing Index of writers, journals and competitions.
The online publication includes:
An Adventure in Short Fiction
In 2023, we published short form writing every quarter. This year, in 2024, we are publishing an interview series with works from short-form writers, including short story, creative nonfiction, hybrid work and flash fiction. For flash fiction, we are affiliated with the journal Flash Frontier. You can submit your flash fictions directly to the Flash Frontier site, here.
The Optimist
Spotlights on emerging voices from all across Aotearoa. Here you will find audio contents as well – we love hearing new voices sing out! Each quarter, we’ll highlight new writers whose work is published online.
Found in Translation
Work representing languages of Aotearoa – on the page and with audio. We encourage audio content so readers can also listen to your languages. If you have translated or transliteral writing that you’d like to share, you can contact us at info@atthebay.org.
Small Craft
A column for craft discussions and advice. This is a space for sharing insights and offering experience around the concepts and mechanics of writing, from longer short stories down to the micro. If you have an idea for a Small Craft piece of writing, you may submit it to the Submissions page or contact us at info@atthebay.org.
Index
Our Index includes short form writers in Aotearoa, plus publications and competitions for short form writing. We love the excitement around short form writing that we see in our small country – and we want to share as many resources as possible, so readers who are keen to know more about our vibrant small form culture can find it easily.
This is a living, growing resource; please contact us if you have suggestions to add.
Books
In 2024, we’ll see a series of books, including Te Moana Reo | The Language Ocean, produced in partnership with The Cuba Press, and three single-author collections, from our new At the Bay | I te Kokoru publishing imprint. Watch this space for updates on launch dates.
Competitions
In 2024, we are hosting the second annual Katherine Mansfield Sparkling Prose competition. See the Competitions page for details – and submit!
